Basil Gimlet

I had one of the best holiday weekends ever, and I hope that you did, too! On Friday, we were lucky enough to take a trip up to Montauk to spend time with Kramer’s side of the family. Simply put, we had a blast. Kramer’s dad rented a beautiful beach house, where we soaked up the sun both on the sand and in the house’s gorgeous pool. Kramer preferred splashing around in the ocean, of course, but I like the pool, if only to avoid having to shake off mountains of sand afterward. Kramer and I even got to do a little grilling, which you all know we’ve missed dearly since moving to the city. Sadly, we were only able to spend one day up in the Hamptons, but we loved every minute of it. Thanks again for the fantastic time, Jay! On Saturday, we were up and on the Long Island Rail Road back into the city to go to the Mets vs. Yankees game at Citi Field for our friend’s birthday celebration. We ate tacos and sausage and peppers, sipped on some beers, and enjoyed the game on yet another beautiful, sunny day. The Yankees won, which I was happy about, but the majority of our party seemed to disagree. I suppose I didn’t live in Queens long enough to develop my devotion to the Mets – my dad likes the Yankees, so I do, too! My good friend Lindsey of Little Seed, Big Apple was there, along with our pal Valerie (who seriously needs to start up a site!), whose boyfriend’s birthday we were there for. Kramer and I hammed it up for the camera a bit, Lindsey and I attempted to interact with children as we goofed around with Valerie and her niece and nephew, and enjoyed some people watching (which is really the most fun thing to do at a sporting event, isn’t it?). On Monday, we attended a barbecue at our neighbor’s apartment that we just so happened to meet through a friend of Lindsey’s – it’s a small world sometimes! It wouldn’t be a Fourth of July without the grill, right?

Kramer and I definitely needed a cocktail to unwind from all of the fun this weekend, and we were fortunate enough to get some fresh basil from one of his friends at work. We put it to good use in this Basil Gimlet. We had picked up some Breuckelen Gin earlier this week, and we have been itching to try it in a fun, summer cocktail. The fresh basil really perks you right up, while the lime is refreshing on a hot day. I’m sure that any fresh herb would be delicious in this drink, but I personally think that basil is the perfect choice.

Basil Gimlet
Your ingredients.

Basil Gimlet
Muddle your basil.

Basil Gimlet
Squeeze your lime juice.

Basil Gimlet
Add the lime juice, gin, and simple syrup to the shaker and fill with ice.

Basil Gimlet
Shake and pour into chilled glasses.

Basil Gimlet
Garnish with a lime wheel and a sprig of basil.

Basil Gimlet
Serves: 2 cocktails
  • 6 ounces gin
  • 4 ounces lime juice (about 3 limes)
  • 2 ounces simple syrup
  • 10 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 lime wheels and 2 basil leaves, for garnish
  1. Muddle your basil in the bottom of a shaker until some juices are released. Add in the lime juice, simply syrup, and gin. Fill to the top with ice and shake for 30 seconds. Strain twice into two chilled glasses, and garnish with a lime wheel and a basil leaf.

    I dig this cocktail. Basil is such a delicious, versatile herb, and gimlets are so refreshing! I’m going to have to give this a try.

      @Derek: I wouldn’t use tomato leaves, as they’re rough and will probably mess up your throat, but Thai basil would probably be great!

    I wonder if thai basil would work too…perhaps more spicy.

    I wouldn’t use tomato leaves, Derek, as they can be poisonous. Stick with the basil.

    This sounds awesome, basil is definitely one of the best parts of summer. And your weekend looks like it was so much fun- that backyard was enormous! Glad you all had such a good trip- and how on earth did you get tickets to a Yankees/Mets game???

    I made these for a b-day party last night. I never can follow a recipe exactly, so I tweaked it a bit using Rose’s sweetened lime juice in place of some of the lime and the simple syrup (because I had it on hand). I also added Sprite to some and ginger ale to other batches to stretch the cocktail a little. Rave reviews all around! Thanks for the inspiration.

      @JCBM: Well, I used fresh lime juice + simple syrup, which is basically the same thing as that lime cordial, but I do love the idea of using ginger!
