Muddy Buddies/Puppy Chow
  • 9 cups Chex (or Chex-like) cereal of your choice
  • 1 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips
  • ½ cup smooth or chunky peanut butter
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  1. Place the cereal in a large bowl and set aside.
  2. Melt the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter in a medium sauce pan over medium heat. You can also use a microwave by placing the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a 1-quart microwavable bowl uncovered on high for 1 minute, then stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. You can use a spatula or clean hands, as I did, because I found it really hard to mix the cereal with the chocolate with a utensil.
  3. Pour the chocolate-covered cereal into a 2-gallon resealable plastic bag or 2 1-gallon resealable plastic bags with 4½ cups of cereal in each bag (I did this because I didn't have a 2-gallon plastic bag).
  4. Add the powdered sugar to the bag, or if you're using 2 1-gallon bags, add ¾ cups of powdered sugar into each bag with 4½ cups of cereal. Seal the bag shut completely and shake until the cereal is well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool (I didn't do this because I felt that it was cool enough after shaking it up). Store in an airtight container. If you're keeping it for more than a day, store in the fridge.
  5. *If you want to wrap them up like I did, I put a heaping ½ cup of Muddy Buddies in each package.
